http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Mastodon/1361 well, zero sludge since crack the skye, but hey, at the beginning of their career they played something that definitively could be tagged as sludge
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Baroness/34361http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Neurosis/60 A Sun That Never Sets - their best record imo and tell me it's not sludgy enough

all these bands may not fit the classical description of sludge metal, but hey, all of them have "sludge" written in their genre, so..
Oh, by the way I love Mouth of the Architect, "Quietly" is a masterpiece.
They seemed to re-invent themselves every album
...didn't dig the hippie drum circle incarnation however...
But do you realize that without so called "labeling" you probably wouldn't be able to discover a lot of records? How would you describe to somebody how Ne Obliviscaris sounds like? "well they are kinda like Alcest with a little bit of Apocalyptica mixed with a lot of Agalloch-like sound and a little bit of Behemoth there and there and they use Opeth-like formula to make their songs and by the way they remind me of swedish Shining a little bit" and what if person whom to you are describing something like this does not know half of the bands?
And all that could simply fit into "progressive black metal" tag.
I MUST FIX MY MISTAKE
By the way, if you like eyehategod, try to listen to Grief. Very nice doomy sludge from Massachusetts I think. Their album "Come to Grief" is astonishing.
damnit, Grief..
Eyehategod is probably my favourite band, ever.
Here's a couple others similar to the ones you posted that I recently discovered. Might wanna give em a listen if you haven't already.
Deadbird
Horn of the Rhino
And Deadbird are really cool guys.. I've only listened to "Head and Heart"(or something really similar) album though.. It reminds me of Rwake a little bit. Do deadbird have any other records worth checking out?
Yeah, its the same band. I think their last album was 'Grengus', its pretty damn good.
Check out 'Twilight Ritual' by Deadbird as well.
Ye're welcome mate. Rock on \m/
I love all of these bands.
I'm going to nerd out now..
Mastodon is one of my favorite bands. Here's a picture of Brent i took when i saw them a little bit after they released Crack The Skye.
Have you ever listened to these bands:
Hull
Coalesce
Young Widows
Tephra
Rise & Fall
I've recently been listening to this band called Haarp. Pretty cool.
Hull? I think my girlfriend told me once about them. She said they suck, so it prevented me from checking them out xD I've listened to Coalesce though, when I was into Dillinger Escape Plan a lot, but I can't say I enjoyed them as much as Tephra for example. And tephra reminds me a lot of Seven Nautical Miles, really great band too. Last time I checked though they had only one album released..I've also listened to "city down"(or very similar album name) by young widows probably a year ago. My only impression I can remember is "too raw(not in a very good way)"I'm not sure about rise & fall, are they melodeath band with one album released? If not, I don't know them. What do they play? And this is first time I hear about Haarp. Are they worth checking out?
I saw the Hull last summer at a little biker shitty bar. Their performance was fucking amazing. Also, when they played, they had the drums set up infront of everyone. Most of the band does vocals too. It was neat. Give it a listen sometime.
Yeah, i'm pretty much all over the place when it comes to music. I just threw some things out there that wasn't technically "sludge metal", but in most cases people that listen to sludge like other maybe faster music too. I wasn't sure. :)
Tephra is fucking awesome. Big black mountain is one of my favorite songs by them.
Rise and Fall is on Death wish, and they have a couple albums. They're on the hardcore side.
Haarp is pretty neat.
Oh, I know that stuff about the Skye, and even about photo of her hidden in a booklet.. Though I don't really like the connection between album and that girl. I mean I understand that it's only dedicated to her, but still, it's not about her, though she seems to be the biggest influence. And I like to think that it's about deep metaphysical shit, space, wormholes, spiritual journeys, and crap like that xD
Hardcore is pretty unexplored territory for me. I'm more into death/grind/black/progressive/doom/post/indie stuff. Maybe some recommendations from those sides?
The hardcore i listen to is all over the place. Not really into "tough guy hardcore" so much. I don't like the band, mad ball, hatebreed, or agnostic front. If you want to put a genre to it, i'm more on the thrashy, experimental, grindy, crusty, dirty side i guess.
Heres a list of a bunch of good bands in my opinion all relating to the genres you listed, and also some hardcore:
converge, loma prieta, these arms are snakes, narrows, burnt by the sun, throats, black cobra, old man gloom, seven sisters of sleep, jucifer, breather resist, mouse on the keys, botch, xasthur, gaza, pg.99, mortal decay, and khanate.
You might find some bands in there you like. :)
No one mentioned Sleep, or Boris? Not sludge, per se, but definitely in the same vein.
and sun o)))
