its necessary to have medication if you want to fit the description of ''normal upstanding citizen''.I have just been diagnosed with chronic adult adhd? i dont mind, i still take the same drugs, only now they are legally prescribed and not quite as hard :)
My mom is 50 and she has ADHD reallllllly bad, always has. If she were to go on meds for it now, I think it would totally change her personality. She's super fucking brilliant and her "madness" and way of thinking lets her be the awesome person she is, and in a lot of ways I think it helps her out in her particular line of work (artificial intelligence weaponry testing).
I think it's a mix of shoddy physician work and people's tendency to be overly emo. I have seasonal affective disorder that hits me every fall/winter fucking hard along with PTSD. But I know how to personally cope with it and bypass medication. I'm not a big believer in doping up your brain chemistry. Don't get me wrong, I know there are people who have serious mental
illnesses and they certainly need drug therapy/assistance to function on
a day to day basis, I just have a hard time justifying the numbers of
people who seek drug therapy for these disorders.
I think physicans and psychiatrists/psychologists need to be more accountable when they write these prescriptions. Anyone with an HMO or PPO can tell you that you're lucky if your doctor spends 15 minutes talking to you in your appointments, how the hell can they gauge mental illness in that time frame? 90% of people I know/see on a daily basis are on some sort of mood altering prescription drug, that's just fucking nuts.
